The Black Phone Horror
Scott Derrickson's claustrophobic thriller remains effective even without a follow-up. Taking place in the late 70s in Denver, several disappearances has left the local kids frightened. When Finney gets captured by the villain and held captive in a dungeon, he fears a fatal end. Yet the disconnected phone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, while the prophetic visions from his sibling Gwen may be his salvation. A solid creepfest. The Tammy Faye Biopic
In the conflict between spirituality and money, the winner is obvious for materialism in this director's delightfully tacky biopic about the fallen TV preacher and her felon spouse. Garfield acts as the corrupt Bakker, who declares at the beginning, claiming divine approval for wealth. The couple set about monetising the American public's religious faith. It's a riot of bad interior design, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Chastain succeeds to show the character in a likable light. Tuesday 14 October, late night, Film4
