Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Weak Men' Comments

The English opener Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from captain Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple conversations following his team's defeat in the second Ashes versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face a series loss with a match to spare, the captain stated he had allowed his sentiment to "drift around" among the playing group.

"I have completed all the talking in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "weak men" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in Brisbane to fall two matches behind.

The team afterwards took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and third Tests.

Prior to this match, Stokes revealed his players had held "honest" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to stay alive in the Ashes battle.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their previous tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "The focus is just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with lots of freedom. It felt like we could do an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia Close of Historic Series Victory

The opener's dismissal on day four was part of a crucial three-wicket burst by Australian spinner Lyon.

Lyon's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on the last day to move to an insurmountable three-nil lead after three Tests.

Defeat will extend the English team's winless run in Australia to 18 Tests and ensure a fourth straight away Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – after England losing the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," admitted the batsman. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll certainly approach it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been tough. They're a formidable side. It was always going to be hard touring here to face them. They were the favourites coming in to it they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

Although the opener's innings in Adelaide probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the side, Ollie Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, extending his modest returns versus Australia.

In 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Amiss – has played as many times in the top order in the Ashes and recorded a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion Pope is under the microscope comes from "you guys" – meaning the journalists – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," added he. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year if I'm honest."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk from the outside. There is no chat like that regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley finished.
